Conductors surprise audiences with secret costumes

On Friday, February 10, the bands and orchestras from Alhambra High School and Martinez Junior High School entertained crowds at the Area Band and Orchestra Festivals. From classic songs to jazz songs, the audience experienced  25 songs from the MJHS Beginning Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Orchestra, and Alhambra Jazz Band, Concert Band, and Orchestra.

The first concert was the band concert with all the band groups performing.  The first group to perform was the MJHS beginning band. They performed three action-packed songs including “The Might of Hercules,” “Dragonfire,” and “Let’s Go Band.” Then the MJHS concert band played three rocking songs, “Northridge Overture,” “Old Town Road,” and “Above and Beyond.” Next, the Jazz bands from both schools came together to play “Minnie the Moocher” which was followed by the Jazz band playing their set with “Littles One,” “Chicks Dig It,” and “Cubano Chant.” The last band group to perform was Alhambra’s concert band. They played “National Game,” “Lament and Tribal Dances,” and “Spain.” To conclude the band concert all four bands joined together to play “The Theme from Jurassic Park.” This song had some special visitors with Mrs. Stafford and Mrs. Flanzbaum dressed in dinosaur costumes entertaining the crowd.

As the band concert came to a close, audiences were treated to some more music fun with the orchestra concert.  The first group to perform was the MJHS beginning orchestra who played two songs from “Essential Elements”; “Bile Them Cabbage Down” and “Can Can.” The last song they performed was “Impulse.” The next group was the MJHS orchestra. Their selections were “The Lost Tomb” and “Sky Suite.” Then, the Alhambra orchestra entertained the crowd by playing “Mama Mia!: Featuring Mama Mia, S.O.S, and Dancing Queen,” Tango Mariana,” and “Rosin: Eating Zombies from Outer Space.” To end this grand night of music all three orchestras came together to perform one final song called “Momentous” which is a fitting name for this wonderful night of music.
