Q: Why did you join the Colorguard?:
A:“ I joined because of my friends – I had a couple friends in Color Guard my freshman year, so afterwards, my friends Brynn, Eva, & lola said, “You need to join the Colorguard!!” and they sent me a video of all the reasons why I should join.”
Q: What were those reasons?:
A:“They said ‘you better join or else!’ so in other words they persuaded me in a friendly way – in a kind-ish manner. ”
Q:How long have you been in Color Guard?
A:“This is my second year in Color Guard.”
Q:Out of those two years what has been the most difficult performance?
A:“ I would say last year at the Delta Band Review, that was our first time performing at an actual competition and the first march we did for a prize. That was the most difficult but we still got third, but it was rough – it was really rough.”
Q:What was the most exhilarating performance you’ve had the pleasure of being a part of?
A:“It was Battle of the Bands- specifically Doing Born This Way by Lady Gaga because all the schools participating in the battle did it in unison. All the bands and everyone doing the choreography did it all at the same time, and it was a big mass of kids coming together to make art.”
Q:Did you guys ever win any competitions?
A:“Yes! At The Foothill Band Review last year- I was facetiming with Eva and she had to leave early before the awards ceremony- and I facetimed and we spoke as third and second place were announced and we all thought “oh, we didn’t get it” and thought we weren’t gonna be called but then all of a sudden they announced us as first place and we all screamed when we realized we got first. Mars and Brynn were our captains last year and they grabbed our trophies- I started to cry- everyone cried.”
Q:How did you guys celebrate winning first place?
A:“ We all- we all just kinda cheered together, we hugged, thanked our Coach Thereesa- but other then that we couldn’t really celebrate after because we were so tired and it was really hot out. We were still all very happy though.”
Q:Whats the hardest part about flag practice or color guard in general?
A:“As for flag practice It can get really hot outside and so it can be hard to practice outside with all the heat, but we’re comfortable enough with each other to still have fun. Counting in for the music can be hard and we have timing issues. Another factor is that practice starts at the end of the day after 6 and people in 7th period just meet up afterwards but it’s hard to focus because everyone is tired and just wants to go home.”
Q:What is the most fun part about being a part of colorguard?
A:“Getting to hangout with everyone! You get to spend long hours with them so you become really close and you end up forming inside jokes, and you enjoy everyone’s presence- that sense of community is nice to have- those people that surround you. Something that’s also fun is you get to go to Santa Cruz and several band reviews!! And usually we go all out on the spirit wear for pep performances (so school events), some people do their make-up, some people get painted hand prints on their legs, tutu’s, cowboy hats are a thing for a couple people- bandanas- all the good stuff.”
Q:Do you have any advice for anyone who is interested in joining colorguard?
A:“Do it!! But make sure you have the time for it! It’s a really big time commitment, it’s really fun, but you need to be able to commit yourself to it and really put in the hours into practice. Don’t be afraid to be yourself and put yourself out there you know? If you’re scared of joining guard, and you know you’re gonna perform in front of people, don’t worry about it too much because we’re all up there performing along with you. We help each other get through the hard times but we also enjoy the good times together. So join colorguard!!”
